Mindfulness does not mean meditation?!

Ways to find moments of peace in your everyday life

Hi there!

There has been so much talk over the recent years on the benefits of meditation, which in theory, is a really simple concept but so many people struggle with it. I’ve heard everything from “meditation is too tough” to “I can’t quiet my racing thoughts” to “I’ve tried and it does nothing” so today, I want to share my experience with meditation, but also talk about the bigger picture here - which is, mindfulness. Did you know that even just walking can be a form of meditation? There’s lot of ways to be mindful and present in our day to day life which does not revolve around what you might think meditation is.

If you're feeling a little frazzled or overwhelmed lately (hey, we've all been there), then this is the right newsletter for you to be reading. Because, let me tell you, my friend – mindfulness is like a superpower that can help you find peace, clarity, and joy in even the busiest of days.

What Exactly is Mindfulness Anyway?

Ok, so before we get too deep into things, let's start with the basics: what the heck is mindfulness? Well, think of it as the art of being present and fully engaged in the moment, without any type of judgment or distraction. It’s about being in a state of curious observation - about tuning into your thoughts, feelings, and sensations with curiosity and compassion, rather than getting caught up in the chaos of everyday life!

Why Does Mindfulness Matter?

Mindfulness isn't just some woo-woo concept – it's backed by science! Research shows that practicing mindfulness on a regular basis can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while boosting feelings of calm, clarity, and well-being. It can serve as a tool and a building block in improving one’s mental health!

How Can You Practice Mindfulness in Your Daily Life?

The good news is, you don't need to say goodbye to the modern world and escape into the jungle to find your zen. Although, if you did that would be pretty cool too, just bring me with? Nope, you can practice mindfulness right where you are in the midst of your everyday life. Here are a few simple ways to get started:

  • Start with Your Breath: Take a few moments to close your eyes and focus on your breath. Notice the rise and fall of your chest, the sensation of air flowing in and out of your nostrils and really try to focus on that feeling. It's amazing how something as simple as breathing can anchor you in the present moment and calm your mind. It’s also been shown that box breathing can help a lot with acting as a reset for anxiety so highly recommend giving it a try!

  • Check in with Your Body: Throughout the day, take a few moments to check in with your body. Notice any tension or discomfort, are your shoulders scrunched up, does your chest feel tight - but do this without trying to change them or push them away. Simply observe and breathe into whatever you're feeling, knowing that it's all just a part of the human experience.

  • Practice Gratitude: Take a moment to reflect on the things you're grateful for. It could be as simple as a beautiful sunset, a hot cup of coffee, or the sound of birds chirping outside your window. Cultivating gratitude can help shift your perspective. You can even take it a step further and get into a gratitude journaling practice for even more benefits!

  • Stay in the Moment: Whether you're eating a meal, taking a walk with your dog, or spending time with loved ones, make an effort to savor the experience fully. Notice the colors, textures, smells, tastes and sounds around you. We often tend to multitask but instead staying mindful in one task at a time can provide so much more fulfillment and satisfaction.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Cut yourself some slack! I’ve said this before but treat yourself the way you would your best friend. We're all human, and we all make mistakes from time to time. Instead of beating yourself up over perceived flaws or mistakes, practice self-compassion.

Notice how none of these involved meditation at all. These simple steps can help us get closer to finding even more happiness in our lives.

Mindfulness Challenge for the Week:

Let’s try a challenge this week - I would love to hear from you on how it went. Everyday this week, let’s set aside just FIVE minutes to practice mindfulness. It could be first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or right before bed – whatever works for you. Just find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and tune into your breath, your body, or the present moment around you. Just do a quick body scan and take a few deep breaths! Trust me, even just five minutes a day can make a huge difference - I know it!!

One easy/healthy recipe to try :

Easy steak diane recipe that’s made even easier if you buy pre sliced mushrooms! This took 20 mins to put together.

One positive affirmation to remember :

Every breath gives me peace.

One thing I am actually obsessed with :

This summer is for spending time outside by the river or a lake paddleboarding and here’s the perfect paddleboard setup you need (that was the more affordable in the market for being light weight as well). PRO TIP: save yourself a lot of time and effort and get this battery powered pump, it’s pricey but it’s so worth it!!

This week, I encourage you to find a moment for yourself to practice mindfulness, even if it means just eating a meal without watching TV or taking your dog for a walk without any music / being on your phone but just being fully present in the moment. Wishing you a happy, productive and peaceful week ahead. Together, I know we can find more health and happiness!

With fluffy hugs,
